good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news head quarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, senator john mccain is considering treatment options. he had surgery to remove the tumor behind his eye last week and the doctors say he's recovering from the surgery amazingly well, but it is not a cure. mola lenghi is in washington with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the news is hitting everyone pretty hard. it's hard to imagine anyone in public life who's gone through as much as john mccain has. this one might be his toughest battle yet. >> i do know this. this disease has never had a more worthy opponent.

>> an outpouring of support. president trump offered his family's prayers saying senator john mccain has always been a fighter. former president barack obama tweeted in part cancer doesn't know what it's up against. give it hell, john. senator graham often referred to as mccain's closest friend in the senate spoke by phone insisting he's been back. >> he said i've been through worse. >> mccain had surgery last week to have a blood clot removed from behind his eye. this type of cancer called glioblastoma has a medial survival rate of a little more than a year. >> he's in for a battle. it's the cancer that's killed ted kennedy, and despite all the research that's going on, we haven't made adequate progress. >> here in washington lawmakers were busy behind closed doors when news of mccain's diagnosis

stunned the room. >> he has been diagnosed before. it's unlikely that diagnosis is related to the current one. >> the phoenix mayo clinic where senator mccain is receiving care he said the mack cain family is including treatment options which could include chemotherapy and radiation. anne-marie? >> mola lenghi in washington. thank you so much, mola. on to health care. last night about two dozen secretaries met with john price and others to try to salvage the health care bill. after nearly three hours they got nowhere. president trump told them not to begin their august recess until they have an obamacare repeal bill. the latest effort to replace obamacare failed yesterday. the president took the senators to task.

at one point he even used a veiled thread to dean heller, a moderate who was opposed to the legislation. >> look. he wants to remain a senator, doesn't he? and i think the people of your state, which i know very well, i think they're going to appreciate what you hopefully will do. >> majority leader misch mcconnell said the senate will vote next week on the debate. the congressional budget office said the deal to repeal it without replacing it would liev 17 million americans without health care by next year. over 150 protesters were arrested last night as they demonstrated against the gop law on capitol hill. the protesters entered the three senate office buildings chanting health care is a human right. ahead on "cbs this morning," we'll ask senator john thune, chairman of the conference about the failed gop efforts to repeal and replace the affordable care

act. and next week some of president trump's closest associates are expected to testify about possible collusion between the trump campaign and russia. on monday the president's son-in-law jared kushner is expected to answer questions from the senate intelligence committee behind closed doors. wednesday the senate judiciary has called donald trump jr., the president's oldest son and paul man a for to testify. attorney general jeff sessions. mr. trump told "the new york times" sessions' decision to recuse himself from the investigation was very unfair to the president. the president said, quote, if he was going to recuse himself, he should have told me before he took the job frmd and i would have picked somebody else. mr. trump also said if the special counsel robert mueller investigated trump finances beyond any relationship to

russia, it would cross a line. at the supreme court the court rule thad the administration can enforce its ban on refugees from six mostly muslim countries about till the federal court appeal rules. but it expands family relationships to now include grandparents that refugees can use to enter the country. today o.j. simpson will make his case to the nevada appeal board. he's now 76 years old and serving time for armed robbery and assault. >> reporter: o.j. simpson will appeal from video. the nfl hall of famer has served nearly nine years for the armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers in a las vegas hotel room. today he'll personally appeal for his release. >> usually what they want to hear is i'm sorry very legal

analyst laurie levinson has covered simpson since he was charged and acquitted of the double murder of his ex-wife nicole brown and her friend ron goldman. they'll ee vat his years in prison and his age. they'll hear from supporting people including one of his robbery victims, but experts say board members have already likely made their decisions. in 2013 they granted parole on some of his charges but he still needed to serve four more years to meets he minimum time behind bars. >> how surprised would you be if he was not grnlted the parole. >> there would be a lot of

scrutiny. >> he could be released as early as october. an 18-year-old chicago woman is in stable condition after being shot in the chest during an apparent road rage incident. police say she was shot by another woman yesterday afternoon following a traffic-related gult. the suspect, a 47-year-old woman pulled out a gun fired one shot. two children in the car with the victim are oklahoma and they're not injured. this morning one of the most destructive wildfires in california is burning, zroig a builds. the so-call eed detwiler fire h been burning since sunday. it appears to be moving away from the park. residents of more than 4,000 homes have been forced to evacuate. >> there's a lot of homes in and around the homes tucked into the

"the baltimore sun" reports a police officer's body cam allegedly shows him planting drugs before an arrest. the public defender said the officer unwittingly recorded himself dropping the drugs and then retrieving them. one officer was suspended and two others. attorney general jeff sessions said yesterday the controversial policy is especially needed in drug cases. the policy reverses an obama administration order prompted by police abuses. the "chicago tribune" reports that a minnesota boy who vanished more than 40 years ago was among serial killer john wayne gacy's victims.

the remains were used to identify him. he was executed in 1934 for the killing of three young men. our top stories this morning, senator john mccain has been diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer. mccain underwent surgery to remove the tumor last week. it was discovering when the doctors treated a blood clot above his left eye. the surgery is not a cure and mccain is considering other treatments. mccain ran for president twice and was a pruz never of war for 5 1/2 year after being shot down ore vietnam. and president trump said had he known attorney general jeff sessions was going to recuse himself from the russia investigation, he would have never hered him in the first place. trump told "the new york times" sessions' decision was very unfair to the president. the white house and the kremlin are defending the dinner
